UK-based Andy Smith who is the Senior Director for Government, Education and Healthcare across Oracle Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) is the latest international speaker to be confirmed for the Future Cities Forum. His keynote will be on One citizen; One government: Transforming service delivery around the citizen while driving out costs.
With advances in technology it has never been easier to design services around citizens rather than for the convenience of bureaucracy. But in the wake of a global financial crisis, money for investment is tight. Local Governments and Cities around the world are grappling with similar challenges. How do cities improve – or at least maintain – service levels at a time of rising citizen demand and reduced income from taxes? And how do they justify the IT investment to sceptical politicians and voters at a time of budget constraints and spending cuts? Andy’s presentation will look at how Local Governments in the UK and elsewhere are responding to these challenges.

Productivity Opportunity in New Zealand: Lessons from the Christchurch earthquake?
Posted by futurecitiesinstitute in Uncategorized on September 5, 2011
Recent post from Malcolm Fraser, CEO Future Cities Forum….
I was speaking to a friend of mine in Christchurch today, and while a generalisation, he commented that many business owners he knows, including himself, have been spending about half their time supporting family and friends in the aftermath of the earthquake…but the projects and business commitments are still being met!!
Even if he is only half right, what does this say for national productivity?
He had two observations a) with everything that has gone on in Christchurch, businesses have got very pragmatic and do not have time for distractions, b) Normal is the new enemy, if you can get the work done in half the time, why go back to the way things were??
I would add that the City Council and citizens of Christchurch also put together a really cool, and very inspiring, city plan to rebuild…in months, not years. Testament to Christchurch’s ‘pragmatic productivity paradigm’? Perhaps Auckland could do with more cafes in containers!!
Worth exploring more, as I am sure other cities could learn from Christchurch…
Future Cities Forum Keynote: Smarter Cities for Smarter Economic Growth
Posted by futurecitiesinstitute in Rutherford Innovation Showcase on September 2, 2011
Kerrie McGarth, Global Business Services Managing Partner for IBM New Zealand, will be a feature Keynote speaker at the upcoming Future Cities Forum. Her Keynote – Smarter Cities for Smarter Economic Growth.
Experts predict population in the world’s cities will double by 2050. This swell in urbanisation coupled with an increase in the amount of data generated is also creating unmanageable complexity, unsustainable waste, and unnecessarily high expenses.
A smarter city leverages the vast amount of information already available to optimise the delivery of city services. We can now monitor, measure and manage nearly any physical system at work in our cities. We have the ability to collect and analyse real-time information on everything from transportation networks to hospitals to the electricity grid.
Kerrie will discuss how cities can empower citizens, build political capital, or develop new business models and partnerships with the private sector. She will also highlight how cities can entice businesses that attract talent, and the talent that attracts businesses, in order to achieve economic growth.
